Is a lack of self-confidence impacting your employee’s performance at work?
According to the definition provided by Psychology Dictionary Online, self-confidence is “our self-assurance in trusting our abilities, capacities, and judgments. It’s the belief that we can meet the demands of a task.”
The father of American Psychology, William James, was one of the first to suggest that self-confidence is a predictor of success.
Self-confidence and resilience are closely linked
Resilience is the ability to bounce back or recover quickly from difficulties or challenges.
Being resilient means having the self-belief and self-confidence to know that you can and will bounce back and can handle anything that life throws your way.
Confidence reduces fear and self-doubt, making us more likely to take healthy risks, learn from our mistakes, and keep pushing forward, regardless of setbacks.
If your employees lack self-confidence…
They could be experiencing chronic stress and anxiety
They won’t progress as quickly in their career
They’re less likely to take risks
Their productivity may suffer
What can leaders do to encourage and promote self-confidence in the workplace?
Provide employees with regular feedback on their performance while maintaining a good balance of positive and critical feedback.
Show compassion and empathy for their struggles and feelings.
Assign them essential responsibilities to demonstrate your trust and confidence in them.
Encourage employees to explore their strengths - the VIA strengths assessment is an excellent tool for doing so. Then, have one-on-one conversations about their results and how they can apply them to their roles and responsibilities.
Provide professional training opportunities to help them develop critical skills.
